There are several variants of the game, each requiring different rules and strategies. For example, the American variation of poker requires the player to bet according to the hand rank. This ranking is determined by the odds of winning. Each variant has its own betting structure, which can include an ante, a forced bet, or a blind. Typically, the player who makes the first bet is called the “pre-flop.” During this round, each player has an obligation to make a minimum bet.

Players then have the opportunity to make a bet to match the bet made by the previous bettor. If they do not, they must fold. They also have the option to raise. A player who matches a bet may raise the bet by the amount of the previous bet or the entire pot.

Players also have the option to check, which is to stay in without making a bet. A player who checks must ensure that no other player has made a bet. The betting round is divided into four or more sections. Usually, the first player to act is the player to the left of the big blind.
